| | Hereford Cathedral Choir launches a new CD its first recording under its current director, Geraint Bowen, featuring the music of the English composer William Byrd 1539/40-1623. Recorded in the cathedral over three nights in early January 2005, the choir performs a largely unaccompanied selection of works by the great Elizabethan composer.
The Dean of Hereford, the Very Revd Michael Tavinor, is enthusiastic about the new recording. ‘Byrd was one of the finest of the Elizabethan composers and the Cathedral Choir is making a major contribution to our understanding of this wonderful music.’
‘Listeners will enjoy the sheer breadth of William Byrd’s music - the moving motets Ave verum and Justorum animae which were written, like the other Latin works on the disc, for performance in private houses where Roman Catholics would have worshipped in secret during the 16th century. The CD gives a glimpse into an age when religious observance was often a very dangerous thing!’
Peter Dyke, the cathedral’s assistant organist, joins the choir for three tracks, accompanying them on the cathedral’s new chamber organ, an instrument ideally suited to this repertoire.
The choir was fortunate to have the expertise of Barry Rose as producer for this CD. Dr Rose is former master of the choir at St Paul’s Cathedral, where he directed the music at the Royal Wedding in 1981.
Speaking of the new CD, Geraint Bowen, the cathedral’s director of music says: ‘I am sure that the disc would make an ideal Easter gift for anyone who enjoys this glorious music.’
The CD, Griffin GCCD 4048, is available exclusively from the Cathedral Shop (01432 374210), price £13.99 (plus £1.50 p&p). |
